Volkswagen SA will add some punch to its local Golf drop-top line-up with the introduction of the Golf 6 GTI Cabriolet to the local market early next year.
The Golf 6 GTI Cabriolet is powered by the same 2,0-litre TSI turbopetrol developing 155 kW and 280 N.m of torque that does service in the GTI hatch. Whether coupled with a six-speed manual gearbox or six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission, this unit will propel the Cabriolet from 0 to 100 km/h in in 7,3 seconds on the way to a 237 km/h top speed (235 km/h for the DSG). Both transmission options will be available on our market.
This model’s party piece is an electrically folding canvas roof that can be opened in 9 seconds and closed in 11 seconds at speeds of up to 30 km/h. In addition to a heated glass rear windscreen, the folding roof also features a special insulating layer and sealing mount fixtures that help to keep unwanted airflow from permeating the cabin at high speeds. Augmenting such safety features as cabin airbags and ABS brakes is a roll-over protection system comprising an electrically actuated metal structure that can be deployed from behind the rear headrests in just 0,25 seconds.
The Golf 6 GTI Cabriolet will arrive on our market during the first quarter of 2013 – pricing will be announced closer to that time.
Much like its forebears, the Golf 6 Cabriolet forms part of a staggered release plan compared to its hatchback stable mates and will therefore be on the market for some time to come. CAR editor Hannes Oosthuizen has recently sampled the eagerly awaited Golf 7 – read his driving impression of the 1,4 TSI DSG model here.
