After recent artists impressions did the rounds in the automotive media, Audi has now unveiled the Sport Quattro concept ahead of its scheduled public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week. With the reveal Audi will celebrate the 30th birthday of the original Sport Quattro.
The Ingolstadt-based manufacturer has upped the ante with this newest concept’s visual aggression. Up front the Sport Quattro’s headlamps (featuring the new Matrix LED technology, standard on the forthcoming A8 grand saloon) have been elongated, there’s a new single-frame grille flanked by larger vents, and a larger Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) splitter. At the rear, a CFRP diffuser, quad tailpipes, and an adjustable spoiler add drama.
Measuring in at 4 602 mm long (2 784 mm wheelbase), 1 386 mm high and 1 964 mm wide, the Sport Quattro is wide and low, but is still based on the current A5 platform. Inside the concept draws inspiration from motorsport, with a digital display taking pride of place in the instrument panel. A slim, minimalist facia is offset by thick-bolstered bucket seats. The digital display includes a race mode to relay track information and lap times back to the driver.
Powering the Sport Quattro concept is a 4,0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine mated with an electric motor to produce 515 kW and 800 N.m of torque. Drive is sent to all fours via the legendary Quattro system and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Despite these outputs, the hybrid system is reportedly very efficient thanks to the likes of cylinder deactivation and a stop/start system. Audi claims 2,5-litres/100 km with emissions of only 59 grams per kilometer.
As can be expected, performance is outstanding. The Sport Quattro concept accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3,7 seconds, and runs to a top speed of 305 km/h. Carbon-ceramic discs and big calipers help bring the 285/30 R21 tyres to a stop.
