As is customary with each Johannesburg International Motor Show we host the CAR Conference. The theme for this year’s event was Technology and Change. CAR Editor Steve Smith was at the event and noted some interesting statistics from the speakers:
1 200 000 – The amount of vehicles that will be manufactured per year in SA by 2020 if NAAMSA’s (National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa) big Automotive Production Development Plan works.
54% – Is the average local content of SA manufactured vehicle. It was 57% in 2011 and 61% in 2010
0,64% – Is South Africa’s contribution to global vehicle production
86 900 000 000 – The amount of rands the SA automotive industry’s contribution to SA’s export revenues. It makes up 12,1% of our total export revenue.
29 000 – The amount of people the motor manufacturer’s employ in SA. It’s 70 000 if you count their component suppliers too.
60% – Of the vehicles sold in SA are imported
100 000 – The number of next-generation Mercedes Benz C-Class vehicles that will be built in SA. That represents a R3-billion investment by Mercedes-Benz.
70%-90% – the amount of a raw hide NOT used in high-end leather interiors. That means 100 tons of leather is wasted globally everyday.
21 600 000 000 – Litres of fuel wasted annually in the world’s traffic jams.
R670 000 000 000 – The amount of money those traffic jams cost in lost productivity. And unless we find a transport solution it will get worse because…
