Ford’s turbocharged 1,0-litre three-cylinder engine is no stranger to the motoring public. Since it was unveiled in 2012, it’s won numerous global awards, including now its fourth Engine Of The Year title.
At the recently-held International Engine of the Year Awards, Ford’s acclaimed 1,0-litre engine also received the award for ‘Best Engine Under 1,0-litre’ for the fourth consecutive year.
Across the various award ceremonies being held each year, this engine has racked up its 8th crown in four years. In 2012, it won its first International Engine of the Year and repeated the feat for four consecutive years. A first in the motoring world. Also in 2012 it was named the ‘Best New Engine”.
“The 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine changed the game for small petrol engines and we’re proud it remains best in class despite a growing number of competitors,” said Joe Bakaj, vice president, Product Development, Ford of Europe. “The spirit of innovation that helped us create this engine is alive and well and we continue to develop new engines.”
Ford reports it’s looking for ways to further enhance their engine line-up and to improve fuel economy. One of the avenues they are exploring is to look at cylinder deactivation. “Ford’s 1,0-litre EcoBoost remains one of the finest examples of engine downsizing,” said Dean Slavnich, co-chairman of the 17th International Engine of the Year awards. “This fantastic three-cylinder shows there is still a way to go for the internal combustion engine.”
