The BMW Group says it has sold more than 100 000 pure electric cars and plug-in hybrids worldwide since the launch of the BMW i sub-brand in late 2013.
The BMW i3 leads the way, with a total of more than 60 000 sales. The BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car, meanwhile, adds more than 10 000 units. Around 30 000 other plug-in hybrids (such as the 330e, X5 xDrive40e and 740e) have also been sold, falling under the BMW iPerformance banner.
In global terms, the BMW Group says it currently offers seven models that either run on electric power alone or are plug-in hybrids.
More derivatives are expected in the years to come, including a plug-in hybrid Mini Countryman in 2017. And BMW has also confirmed that the open-top BMW i8 Roadster is scheduled for a 2018 launch.
After that, the range will be further extended to include a pure electric Mini in 2019 and a pure electric BMW X3 in 2020. At the start of the next decade, another, larger BMW i model with electric drive (currently dubbed the BMW iNext) is due to arrive.
