Jaguar appears intent on competing against the likes of the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE with a possible ‘J-Pace’ variant. The flagship SUV will utilise the engines and platform from the Range Rover, as well as a brand new design at the hands of Ian Callum.
Based on information sourced by Autocar, the J-Pace will be an on-road biased SUV, despite being based on the very capable Range Rover platform. It will also be Jaguar’s fourth SUV in just five years and is expected to emerge in 2021.
The decision to expand its SUV portfolio is based on the success the F-Pace has seen since its launch two years ago; a model which is likely to count for two-thirds of the brand’s global sales by 2020.
The F-Pace has proven reasonably successful in South Africa, with 27 units finding new homes last month. That’s more than ten times the number of XEs sold in the same period, but appreciably less than the 136 E-Paces sold. Regardless, it’s clear that Jaguar’s clientele is favouring the idea of a road-going SUV.
Regardless, Jaguar shows no signs of dispensing with its traditionally sedan-oriented product profile, with replacements for the XE, XF and XJ still in the production pipeline.
