The new Mazda CX-30 has been unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show, billed as a fresh “core” global model slotting in between the CX-3 and CX-5.
The Japanese automaker says its new compact crossover will “comfortably” seat four adults (although it’s officially classed as a five-seater) and was designed to be “easy to drive”.
The new CX-30 measures 4 395 mm in length, which makes it 120 mm longer than the CX-3 and 150 mm shorter than the CX-5. With a wheelbase of 2 655 mm, the newcomer boasts an extra 85 mm between its axles compared with the CX-3, while its ground clearance comes in at 175 mm (15 mm more than its smaller sibling). The luggage compartment, meanwhile, will swallow a claimed 430 litres, with the liftgate opening measuring a generous 1 020 mm wide.
Power comes from Mazda’s latest SkyActiv-G naturally aspirated 2,0 petrol engine, while a SkyActiv-D 1,8 turbodiesel unit is also expected to be available. In addition, the Japanese firm will offer its clever new SkyActiv-X compression-ignition petrol mill, as used in the latest Mazda3.
Drive will be sent to either the front axle or all four corners, with transmission options set to include six-speed manual and six-speed automatic gearboxes.
Inside, the cockpit is “firmly centred” on the driver, with instruments angled slightly towards the person behind the steering wheel. Two interior colour schemes will be offered: one with dark brown accents and one with dark blue accents.
The former scheme will be available in black or pure white leather (with perforations in the black leather option revealing a brown interior liner), while the dark blue scheme will feature fabric or leatherette upholstery, offered in “greige” (that’s a mix of grey and beige) or black.
