Love it or hate it, there’s no denying that the G82 M4 Competition is an impressive feat of automotive engineering and – on paper at least – is a proper successor to the F82 M4 Competition Package.
That said, an all-out drag race is a perfect test to measure how similar yet different they are to one other in terms of all out acceleration. For the sake of spicing things up, and perhaps to act as a bit of a litmus test for the proper M-cars, the Carwow team has thrown an M440i into the mix, too.
Spec-wise, the rear-wheel drive F82 Competition is powered by BMW’s iconic twin-turbo S55 motor which produces a hearty 331 kW and a peaky 550 N.m and mated to BMW’s 7-speed M-DCT double clutch transmission. Slightly mirroring its predecessor’s drivetrain architecture, the also rear-driven G82 M4 Competition is equipped with the new twin-turbo S58 that has an output of 375 kW and 650 N.m of torque, sent to ZF’s tried and tested 8-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. The odd one out, the M440i, is the only car with an all-wheel-drive system, managed by the German automaker’s staple xDrive setup and ZF’s 8-speed automatic gearbox, too. Powering the M440i xDrive is BMW’s exceptional B58 single twin-scroll turbocharged 3,0-litre in-line six-cylinder motor, generating a healthy 285 kW and 500 N.m.
The M4s might have a leg up on the M440i in terms of power, however, the xDrive system will surely give the M440i an advantage off the line. With a little rev from each car – as well as comments about their nearly identical exhaust notes – the race begins. Watch the full video at the link below.
