Volkswagen, following a year of ambiguity about the future of their popular hatchback, has finally announced that the iconic model will live on, with the latest iteration being the ninth generation of Golf.
Since the mid-1970s, over 35 million Golfs have been sold, and the rich history of the model demands a survival into the future of motoring although its shape as we know it may not remain.
CEO Thomas Schäfer stated; “We would not let go of the Golf name, no way. We have iconic brand names, Golf and GTI. It would be crazy to let them die and slip away.”
So, far from the end of production, what does the future look like for iconic and popular hatchback?
According to Schäfer, somewhere in between the ID.2 electric car, and the ID.3, with a mid-cycle facelift expected in 2023. Some confusion clouds the ID.3, which was never intended to be a successor to the Golf. The model was a compact minivan, with a higher roof than the regular hatchback in question here, and it was made available during the fifth and sixth generations of model.

Schäfer indicated that the latest in Volkswagen’s line of iconic hatches may be named the “ID Golf,” marking a clear distinction from the ID.3, which was generally expected to succeed the Golf in the eventual move to a fully electronic offering from VW.
Golf lovers can take comfort in the fact that one of history’s most iconic hatchbacks survives another generation, although more than likely as a pure electric vehicle.
