In celebration of World Design Day, VW’s Group Design head Klaus Zyciora, posted a rendering on Instagram that brought to life – somewhat- a pick-up version the VW ID. Buzz. Although there’s a good chance that we’ll likely never see it come to life, fingers crossed that we get to see a real-life pick-up Volkswagen ID. Buzz at some point.
The rendering showed off what looked like a double cab pick-up variant of the Buzz that forfeited its rear seating compartment in exchange for a cargo bed. Another notable element that has changed is the sliding second-row doors, which are presented as hinged doors in the rendering. A thinner light strip wraps around the rear haunches of the Buzz compared to its real-life counterparts’ slightly larger rear lights.
Zyciora posed the question “Should we take it to the next level?” In his caption that accompanied the rendering. One could wonder if we may see a pick-up variant of the firm’s latest electric van. Here in South Africa, we’ve had numerous vehicles with this exact configuration and they’ve not only stood the test of time, but also managed to retain their popularity and desirability within the local automotive market for decades. Volkswagen has always had a hand in the pick-up vehicle pot and has seen great success, especially in South Africa.
The Volkswagen Caddy and Transporter Pick-Ups were a fan favorite here in the Southern tip of Africa. These relatively low-slung compact single and double cab and bakkies cemented themselves within the hearts of South Africans through the 90s and the early 2000s. From the depths of rural farmlands to the city that sleeps only when there’s load shedding, these cargo carriers were ubiquitous.
As the automotive industry moves over to an all-electric world, its interesting to see some of the DNA of ICE’s of a dying era still etched into the design DNA of some electric vehicles.
