Rayne is a small town in Louisiana with just over 7 300 residents. It covers an area of just 9,9 square kilometres.
The 202 United States census noted that the city has just 2 834 households, and their only way out of the not-so bustling metropolis is via the I-10 interstate highway. According to Motor1.com, it’s a busy intersection of the interstate, and on Thursday the 17th of March, a single-vehicle accident took place.
Via their Facebook page, the Rayne Police Department reported that a 2011 KW pantechnicon had left the roadway, driven down the embankment and ramped over a large intersection, finally coming to rest on a privately owned piece of land. The truck subsequently caught alight and was then quickly dealt with by the Rayne Volunteer Fire Department. Only minor injuries were sustained by the driver who is reported to be in good health after the ordeal.
While its quite difficult to see from the footage what might have caused the incident, it appears as though the driver either fell asleep or the vehicle suffered a serious mechanical failure. These are however assumptions. It’s often that these sort of accidents happen with a driver behind the wheel, and not as a runaway incident as one may assume. We saw this last month when the owner of a brand new Polo drive their vehicle straight out of the parking lot and through a fence.
