With the constant influx of new vehicles – especially those from China – on our market it’s an exciting time to be in the motoring industry. There are plenty of gadgets and nuances that make those products appealing to a younger crowd, but there’s a pleasing straightforwardness to the Volkswagen T-Cross that I appreciate.
As much as those models bring bang-for-buck in terms of outputs and technology features, the T-Cross is an honest package (especially in base trim) that just feels solid on all fronts. Throttle and brake pedal calibration, from initial takeoff to faster journeys, are neutral and predictable and the comfortable ride provided by the supple suspension and 205/60 R16 Giti rubber have made navigating busy Cape Town roads during winter a breeze. The fuel consumption is also coming down slowly, as
I’ve figured out that the T-Cross is particularly efficient when it is slowly coaxed to its cruising speed with light throttle inputs. A long, upcoming road trip should hopefully see that figure drop below 7.0 L/100 km.
