In its second month under our custodianship, the ruggedness of the long-term Ford Tremor continues to impress, but there are some storage-related challenges.

- Time spent: 02/06 months
- Distance covered: 659 km
- Average fuel consumption: 11.21 L/100 km
- We like: Sense of presence; refined powertrain
- We don’t like: May need to find a better load bay cover
Including a previous-generation Ford Ranger, this is the third double-cab I’ve run to date. As such, I’ve negotiated the gamut of pros and cons associated with “owning” a vehicle in this segment. While I really enjoy how versatile this type of package can be, including the ability to carry a load of any kind – whether for recreation or graft – I also know that living with a bakkie has its challenges, including secure storage options.
This brought me to the matter of how best to cover the vehicle’s load bay. Based on previous experience, the first thing I did when arriving home in the Ranger Tremor was to remove its snugly-fitted leather-effect tonneau cover, including the two accompanying metal rods that prop the middle of this cover up. Although neat-looking, this item isn’t easy to open and then resecure should you, on occasion, need to load items taller than the height of the load bay (like children’s bicycles). It’s also easy to break into, and it doesn’t offer protection from elements like dust and rain. With the load bay currently exposed to allow quick access, I’m keen to research which solution, whether a canopy or a sliding metal cover, will best serve my needs.
