The E-Class Cabriolet features a really clever system to stop draughts. Called Aircap, it reduces turbulence for occupants in all four seats. It also has Airscarf, a neck-level heating system for chilly days. Aircap and Airscarf come with the Cabriolet Comfort package. The soft top can be opened and closed fully automatically within 20 seconds -“ even when driving at speeds of up to 40 km/h. We are very impressed at the car’s quiet interior. For instance, it is possible to have a perfectly normal phone conversation in hands-free mode even when travelling at over 200 km/h.
Joining the saloon, coupé and wagon variants of the Mercedes-Benz’s E-Class, is the new E-Class Cabriolet that not only falls in line with its “four seasons, four passengers” philosophy, but is also the fourth body style for the new E-Class.
Two engine options are available for the E-Class Cabriolet, the V6-engined E350 and V8-powered E500. The 3,5-litre V6 produces 200 kW at 6 000 r/min and 350 N.m of torque from 3 000 r/min. Acceleration to 100 km/h from zero takes places in a claimed 6,9 seconds, and CO2 emissions are just 229 g/km.
The E500 Cabriolet’s 5,5-litre V8 produces 285 kW at 6 000 r/min and 530 N.m of torque at 2 800 r/min. Acceleration to 100 km/h from zero happens in a claimed 5,3 seconds, with CO2 emissions rated at 257 g/km. Both models make use of the company’s 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission as standard.
