One of the safest green cars around must be the Volvo S40 1.6D DRIVe, which sips just 4,3 litres of fuel per 100 km and boasts a CO2 emissions rating of just 114 g/km. Like other green cars, the S40 has a stop-start system, which switches off the engine when the car is stationary. In South Africa, this can be a very bad thing on a hot day -“ because no engine means no aircon. Not with this Volvo. This clever car monitors the cabin temperature and, if it gets too hot, it switches the aircon back on.
