Classic car enthusiasts will all sit upright when you mention the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. This event is one of the highlights on the international classic car calendar each year.
As the BMW Group sponsors this event, it has decided to show this past weekend a rather surprising little car. Based on the chassis of a Mini, Mini’s designers have worked together with Touring Superleggera, an 88-year old Italian custom coachbuilding company, to built this exclusive open-top, two-seater roadster called the Mini Superleggera Vision.
Mini’s summary of the car was as follows: “expressing the most minimalist and emotional style of motoring; and on the other hand its electric drivetrain gives the car distinctly modern driving dynamics”.
This model means Mini’s aim to produce a Mazda MX-5 competitor is getting closer to a production reality. Rumours suggest that there could be a new Mini range based on this roadster that will be powered by the new three- and four-cylinder engines, as well as a new electric unit that could be a further development from BMW’s i3.
As the Superleggera Vision is longer and wider than the current Mini Roadster, it will form a perfect competitor for Mazda’s MX-5.
