After stormy weather had derailed yesterday’s proceedings (day 3) of the 42nd Continental Milligan Vintage Trial in George in the Western Cape, the contestants were anxious to get going on the fourth and final leg of the trial.
To be honest, so was I, but the rain was still pouring down and the roads and rivers were already flooded. Luckily, the planned route was clear and after an hour delay, things got off to a cold and damp start. The heavy rains of the night before had taken its toll and some of the vintage and classic cars needed a fair amount of coaxing to spring into life, but eventually all participants were lined up at the starting point.
The route was very pleasant and took us on the old George/Knysna road, where the swollen rivers were still rushing under the old stone bridges. There were also a fair amount of debris in the road, but all the cars managed to reach the tea stop in Herbertsdale. The rain came down in torrents during the half-time interlude and the route from Herbertsdale to the N2 was starting to flood. But, even the classic Alfa Romeos managed to pass through the rushing waters…
Keep an eye on the website for the results of the trial as well as a video or two of the magnificent classics and vintage cars that took part in this year’s event.
