Each year, the eight-member CAR editorial team – boasting nearly a century’s worth of collective experience – drive more than 100 new vehicles. This in-depth knowledge allows us to make a call on what we believe are the best cars in South Africa. However, your opinion is equally important, and that’s why we’d like you to vote for your favourite vehicles in the industry’s 12 biggest categories. Some segments have more contenders than others – an interesting trend to note is how many excellent vehicles compete in the SUV/crossover classes – but in all except two you’ll see complete ranges of vehicles, not just single standout models. We flip that approach on its head for the budget car category (where pricing is a particularly crucial element) and performance car.
If you were wondering where, for example, some of your favourites such as the new BMW 3 Series or Mercedes-Benz GLE are, our rules for eligibility are simple: at least six of the eight CAR members (therefore 75%) would have had to experience a car for it to be included in this shortlist before we vote mid-February. A number of important vehicles, like those two and others, launch locally in March, just too late to meet the deadline for the Top 12 Best Buys awards feature in the April 2019 issue of CAR, on sale 18 March. Don’t miss it to see which cars win trophies, and how you – the CAR fans – voted!
