When the A90 Mk5 Supra was announced, it was immediately recognized as the successor to one of Toyota’s most revered cars; the A80 MK4 Supra. Car enthusiasts were in a frenzy leading up to the highly anticipated reveal of what most believed to be the revival of an icon, the MK4 Supra and the esteemed 2JZ engine. To the dismay of many automotive idealists, the MK5 supra debuted with a BMW sourced inline-six.
Some would say that the 2JZ motor belongs in the new supra and not BMW’s impressive B58. Some would go as far as to take a 2020 MK5 Supra and install a built 2JZ into it and try to push north of 745kW. Marc from Pterodactyl Tactics took his Toyota-powered MK5 Supra to the Hoonigan team to kick off their new “Dyno Everything” series.
Before talking about the video let’s talk about this amazing build. Let’s commence at the heart of this build; the 2JZ. The engine’s head has been fully built. It’s been ported and polished while the head has GSC Billet 278 camshafts which are designed to go into the MK4 Supra. Before the video was shot the team upgraded the turbo to a 7675 78mm turbo from PrecisionTurbo and boost pressure was set at a little under 2 bar. Another notable change to the supra is the replacement of the 8-speed automatic transmission with the E46’s 6-speed manual gearbox mated to an E92 M3 differential, so some BMW DNA remains.
Toyota recently teased the upcoming manual version of the MK5 Supra that will hopefully arrive sooner rather than later. Unlike the dual exit exhausts of the stock MK5, the Pterodactyl Tactics supra has a single exit exhaust surrounded by a custom rear diffuser. The entire car is wrapped in Nardo grey that are contrasted but subtle carbon fibre elements and sits on a tasteful pair of Work wheels.
The “Dyno Everything” series saw the Supra set the bar in its first-ever episode. The series will feature a wide range of cars and will have the Hoonigan team guess how much power it makes. The person who is closest to the actual number without going over will be declared the winner. Participants get three dyno runs to get the highest horsepower number possible.
The first run for the MK5 was a dud as the dyno was calibrated for a full 3rd gear pull while the tuner was in 4th gear, but the car managed to squeeze out 406kW. The second run was more fruitful, the car produced 686kW!
Watch the video linked down below to find out what the final figure in the third run was. FYI, the current “world-record” for the highest recorded power figure for the MK5 Supra chassis is 782kW.
