25 best-selling vehicles in Europe for 2019: hatchbacks still dominate

The studious folks over at Jato Dynamics have released a list of the 25 best-selling passenger vehicles in Europe for 2019, with the outgoing Volkswagen Golf still ruling the roost.

Interestingly, while South Africa’s new vehicle market contracted in 2019, new vehicle sales in Europe increased by 1,1 percent for the passenger car market in Europe. In addition, 2019 was the fifth consecutive year of growth for Europe, and the highest result seen since 2007 when the market exceeded 16 million units.

According to Jato Dynamics, some 15 757 412 new vehicles were registered in Europe in 2019. Interestingly, though, the automotive business intelligence company says these positive results can be “largely explained by purchases made in December to get ahead of the new EU emissions regulations that took effect at the beginning of 2020”.

The figures show the SUV segment experienced a seventh consecutive year of double-digit growth, accounting for 38 percent of the total market. Still, hatchbacks dominate the top 25, with the outgoing seventh-generation Golf leading the charge in Europe (410 330 units were registered over the year). Renault’s Clio was second, with the VW Polo in third and the Ford Fiesta in fourth.

Volkswagen’s Tiguan was the first of the SUVs, taking fifth, ahead of the Peugeot 208, Dacia Sandero, Renault Captur, Ford Focus and Skoda Octavia.
