Finally! Aston Martin DBX production officially kicks off in Wales…

The first full-production version of the new Aston Martin DBX has finally rolled off the assembly line at the company’s St Athan facility in Wales.

The Gaydon-based firm has confirmed first deliveries to customers will take place later in July.

Aston Martin says “around 80 percent” of the DBX units produced in Wales will be exported. South Africa will be one of the markets to which the SUV is shipped, with the brand’s local arm announcing pricing late in 2019. That starting figure, however, has since increased to R3 899 000.

Keith Stanton, Aston Martin’s interim chief operating officer, said it was “a real privilege to be here today to witness the completion of the first production Aston Martin DBX”.

“It is an honour to see the first DBX come off the line and my only regret is that everyone who works for this incredible brand can’t be here to witness it.”

Marek Reichman, Aston Martin executive vice-president and chief creative officer, said he was “incredibly proud of our first SUV, which is as much of an Aston Martin as any one of our sports cars”.

Revealed in November 2019, the DBX is the first SUV and first full five-seater in the British firm’s history. Power comes from the Mercedes-AMG-sourced twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 shared with the DB11 and Vantage, although here it offers 405 kW and 700 N.m. That’s enough, says Aston Martin, for a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in 4,5 seconds and a top speed of 292 km/h.

In June 2020, Aston Martin executive chairman Lawrence Stroll confirmed the firm planned to expand the DBX range with new “derivatives” from 2021.
