The organisers of the World Car Awards have announced the Kia Telluride as the World Car of the Year, with the Korean firm also grabbing a sub-category title.

The Telluride, an eight-seater SUV unveiled in North America in January 2019 as the “largest ever Kia” (slotting in above the Sorento), went up against the Mazda CX-30 and Mazda3 as one of three finalists in the running for the overall gong.

The Telluride delivers what Kia calls “comfortable seating for up to eight” and draws its urge from a naturally aspirated 3,8-litre V6 petrol engine worth 217 kW and 355 N.m. It is offered in North America with an eight-speed automatic transmission and active on-demand all-wheel drive.

And the sub-category winners? Well, the World Urban Car award went to the Kia Soul EV, which held off the (also electric) Mini Cooper SE and the Volkswagen T-Cross for the title.

The Porsche Taycan, meanwhile, was named both World Luxury Car and World Performance Car, beating the Mercedes-Benz EQC and Porsche 911 in the former category and the 911 and Porsche 718 Spyder/Cayman GT4 in the latter.

Finally, the World Car Design of the Year award went to the Mazda3, which overcame the Taycan and Peugeot 208.

A jury of 86 international automotive journalists selected the winners based on their evaluation of each eligible vehicle “as part of their professional work”.
