This week, we’ve been spending some time with the fastest Fiesta ST to date, the ST200, and one thing’s for sure – time sure does fly when you’re having fun!
While the Fiesta ST is one of the hottest hatches among South African driving enthusiasts, Ford has given the ST a special edition make-over to offer “greater visual appeal, matched to an even more thrilling driving experience.”
"We are proud to present our most exciting and dynamic Ford Fiesta ST ever," said Tracey Delate, General Manager, Marketing -“ Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa. "The special edition Fiesta ST200 offers more of everything: eye-catching styling, exclusive design features, exhilarating performance and enhanced handling.”
On the outside
On first appearance, I was surprised at how modest the ST200’s exterior seems to present itself. Knowing what it’s capable of on the road, I expected its exterior to have somewhat of a more ‘you can’t catch me’ and boastful appearance. On second thought, perhaps it’s a good contrast to appeal to a wider variety of drivers.
The ST200’s ‘Storm Grey’ exterior colour is exclusive to this limited edition model, and while it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, I personally love the colour! It contrasts nicely with the ST200’s matt black alloy wheels and sporty body kit.
Inside
In the cabin, a slightly different atmosphere from the regular STs is present, with sportier touches such as an ST200 plaque in the centre console, premium Recaro heated sport seats with partial leather, dual-tone seatbelts, illuminated scuff plates and privacy glass for the rear windows.
Reverse parking sensors with an integrated reverse camera are also included in the high-level of specification for added driving convenience.
All of the standard Fiesta ST’s features remain part of the package, including SYNC® with Bluetooth and Voice Control, Ford MyKey, remote central locking with keyless entry and start, climate control, as well as seven airbags including a driver’s knee airbag.
I have to mention the ST200’s sport seats again, because I enjoyed them so much that I found myself eager to leave family dinners just to feel the support and comfort that they offer. Not too soft, not too firm, these Recaro seats are probably the most comfortable car seats I’ve ever sat in.
Driving the Fiesta ST200
When it comes to driving and performance, the ST200 is certainly built for those who appreciate a driver-focused vehicle – you get a sports car feel, in a hatch! While Fiesta ST’s are known for their high levels of performance and enhanced driving thrill, the ST200 takes it a step further.

Why ‘200’?
In terms of power, its 1,6-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine peaks at 149 kW, or otherwise, 200hp – which is where the name claim ‘ST200’ comes from. Maximum torque jumps to 290 N.m, but it doesn’t end there. A further 11 kW and 30 N.m are available for up to 20 seconds when the driver needs that extra bit of kick.
The engine is mated to a superbly smooth six-speed manual gear box that truly is a pleasure to use. Short, quick changes between gears get you right up to speed where and when needed, and the amount of control it offers you keeps you on your toes and in-line with the ST200’s ‘fun-to-drive’ reputation.
Steering is particularly sharp and accurate while its weight gives the ST200 a good sense of assertiveness, especially around sharp bends and turns – it almost feels like it already knows where you’re going, and that’s exactly what you want from a car that offers this much power and performance.
Sold out!
The limited edition Ford Fiesta ST200 is priced from R339 900.
Originally Ford had limited production of the ST200 in South Africa to 160 units, and not surprisingly, they’ve already sold out! So if you want one, your best bet is to hope that a second-hand unit becomes available soon, or speak to Ford SA about buying one of the media fleet units once rotations are done!
