By: CAR magazine

It’s not always easy to find a weekend activity that works well for both kids and parents. With school vacation underway, the challenge is even more real to avoid the more predictable activities. Enter the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing! This family friendly event takes place in Port Elizabeth this weekend and offers a range of activities that’ll leave the whole family smiling.

What is the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing about?

In total it is five days where surfing lovers can expect top class wave riding action, as well as all the good things that come with the surfing lifestyle:

  • Surf-ready Volkswagens on display (including any surfer’s dream companions, the California Beach and California Coast).
  • Activities and competitions from co-sponsors
  • Cleaner Ocean awareness activities
  • The best in beach food and beverage vendors -“ and lots more
Fun-filled activities for kids are the order of the day! Bring the kids down to the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing for surf action, kids crafts and more.

 What about the surfers?

From a surfing perspective the event hosts junior and senior, men’s and women’s divisions as well as a Longboarding division. And, thanks to the support of Volkswagen South Africa and Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, the women’s premier division in this event has been upgraded to a WSL Qualifying Series rating of 3000, making it the biggest women’s qualifying series in Africa and one of only five in the world.

…and our oceans?

In celebration of global Ocean Awareness Month this June, Volkswagen will also be driving an environmental message with an emphasis on the Ocean’s plastic waste crisis. Spectators are invited to take pictures surfing Volkswagen’s recycled plastic Wave or posing with the giant plastic waste Jellyfish and to post their pictures on social media as a symbol of their promise to ride the wave towards a cleaner ocean.

Take in all the action this weekend if you’re in PE and bring your kids, and family along with you! Share your experience online by using #VWSAOpenOfSurfing or keep up with the latest from what promises to be a fun-filled event on Instagram and Twitter.
