August 2021 issue of CAR magazine on shelves now!
At CAR, we’re starting the third quarter of the year off with something rather special. The BMW M4 Competition is easily the most anticipated performance car to enter our local market this year, so we’ve decided to pair it up against its ancestors as far back as the E36 generation.
Since its inception, the M3 and M4 badge has evolved as the engineers at BMW M strive for unhinged dynamics and performance. Looking at the models that came before it gives us the opportunity to track its evolution and understand why its badge is one of the most iconic in the automotive sphere.
While the topic of evolution of performance is trending, we also put two speedy SUVs to the test. These two blacked-out forced-induction luxury high-riders are the Audi RS Q8 Quattro Tiptronic and Range Rover Sport SVR by SVO.
From Ingolstadt, the RS Q8 bears VAG’s popular twin-turbocharged 4,0-litre V8 which provides the all-wheel drive system with 441 kW via an eight-speed torque converter. It’s got speed, presence, comfort and style but is this enough for it to make a name for itself in a now largely competitive sphere? We find out.
One quick SUV that has had its sword unsheathed for quite some time is the Range Rover Sport SVR with its supercharged 5,0-litre V8 which sends 423 kW to all four paws via an eight-speed torque converter as well. What makes this particular test unit special however, is it’s unique detailing at the hands of SVO. We review whether this customisation package is worthy of the price that’s being asked.
Keeping to the theme of speed, there are some big movements being made with regards to Formula One returning to South Africa since its departure in 1993. Via the SAGP and key members in the industry, the race’s return to Kyalami Raceway seems to be a matter of when rather than if. We dive deep into what movements are being made and what still needs to be done in order for this prestigious event to finally return to SA.
Lastly, it’s no secret by now that the automotive sphere is on its way to being almost fully electrified. That’s why it’s important for you, the consumer, to know what an electrically powered vehicle entails which you can do with our in-depth Tech Feature that explains all of the details you need to know. We also list every electric vehicle on sale in South Africa as of today.
All this and much more in the August 2021 issue of CAR.
