Earlier, in the eight-lap race that decided the starting grid for the 45-minute event, it was Whale and Dodkins who pipped the Belgian Lola by 0,2sec.
Third place in the 45-minute South African TT race was filled by the Trans Africa Racing Ford Daytona Coupe shared by multiple SA champion Sarel van der Merwe and Jonathan du Toit. It had had failed to finish the first race but proved a reliable runner in the longer race. .
This was the seventh running of the South African Tourist Trophy, with the first race having taken place in 2002. This event, for pre 1966 Sports and GT cars has proved a big success and this year a sub-category was introduced for pre-1961 cars.
British driver Peter Dubsky, in a 1956 D-Type Jaguar took the laurels in this latter category in the eight-lapper, with Nic Parrott, of South Africa, finishing highest of the pre-1961 cars in the 45-minute race. Parrott was 11th overall out of the 18 finishers, driving a 1959 MGA.
The retirement rate in the second race was high, with 13 of the original field of 31 cars failing to reach the finish. The exciting days racing was watched by a huge crowd – virtually a sell-out.
