As is often the case, we’re quite glad that purchasing something on Bring a Trailer and then shipping it over to South Africa is quite the process. Well at least, our bank accounts are glad, you see, so often something has come up for auction, like the Toyota Hilux featured here, and had it not been for the aforementioned malarky, we’d need to, in theory at least, bring many a trailer…
This week saw an utterly exquisite 1985 Toyota Hilux 4×4 bakkie five-speed fall under the hammer, and as if the deal needed more sweetening, it came with a 1978 Yamaha GT80 Enduro strapped into the back, phwoar!
What was essentially sold as the fourth-generation Toyota Hilux over here in South Africa, , this Washington-based example finished in white with Ivan “Ironman” Stewart graphics over tan upholstery and is powered by a 2,4-litre inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transmission and a two-speed transfer case.
The Toyota Hilux has an almost original interior that features a bench seat upholstered in tan vinyl with patterned cloth inserts. Amenities include a Kenwood CD player with Bluetooth capabilities, air conditioning, manual door locks and windows, and the all-important auxiliary gauge pod with an inclinometer and an altimeter.
On the exterior of the Toyota Hilux, aside from the decals which were apparently applied when the vehicle was new, this pickup also features a roll bar with four KC lights, a tubular rear bumper with an integrated receiver hitch, step bars, a spray-in bedliner, mud flaps at each corner, and fog lamps. The aftermarket wheels and BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A tires were added by the most recent owner.
As for the Yamaha GT80 Enduro, it’s powered by a 72cc two-stroke single mated to a four-speed manual transmission and finished in red with white pinstripes and fenders. Equipment includes Autolube oil injection, street lighting, dual rear shocks, and drum brakes front and rear. It’s odometer shows a mere 1 200 km.
With bidding having closed on the evening of the 1st December 2021, the pair sold for a handsome $46 000 (R734 880). Worth the money, or would you rather a brand new Toyota Hilux without the Yamaha?
