The Carnival City Casino 400 on November 14 and 15, the final round of this year’s SA Off Road Car Racing Championship…presented by Absa, will feature a number of changes this year aimed at improving an event that turned out to be one of the highlights of the 2002 season.
With a number of championship issues in both the Production and Special vehicle categories set to go all the way to the wire, the East Rand event will be loaded with interest. However, the organisers, the Koepel Club, have come up with a few changes that should please competitors and spectators alike.
For a start the spectator section within the grounds of the Carnival City complex has been revamped. The rebuild includes widening the track and the introduction of additional high- speed ramps aimed at increasing the spectacle for motorsport enthusiasts.
“Revamping the section of the route that passes through the Carnival City Casino grounds should prove to be exciting,” said Koepel Club chairman Willie Prinsloo. “Spectators will be able to see the cars three times from one vantage point and with the Prologue now being run entirely within the complex they will see the Production and Special Vehicles on both days and the Motorcycles and Quads on Saturday only.”
Prinsloo added that this year’s route will be run over three loops of 146km and include some tough terrain not used in the past with the organisers hoping for some the rain leading up to the race to help keep the dust down.
“For those motorsport fans wanting to combine off-road action with other pursuits, Carnival City Casino has the answer,” said Carnival City Casino general manager Rod Walker. . “We are able to provide an interactive, diverse and fun experience and apart from the many activities for adults, teenagers and children in the casino complex, there will be a beer tent and fast food outlets.
“Last year’s event was a tremendous success, but we would like to go one better this year and make the final race of the championship one to remember for competitors and spectators.”
The Prologue starts at 12:00 on Friday, November 14 and the main race at 08:00 on Saturday, November 15.
