The MSA Off Road Car Racing Commission regrets to announce that Mike Stangl, co-driver for Atang Makgekgenene, died as a result of injuries sustained when the Jimco in which they were competing left the road and rolled down a mountainside during the Nissan Sugarbelt 400.
Stangl attempted to exit the cockpit, which upset the balance of the vehicle and it continued to roll further down the mountainside trapping him under the vehicle. Makgekgenene managed to get out of the stricken vehicle and summonsed assistance.
“The MSA Off Road Car Racing Commission, the Natal Off Road Motor Club, organisers of the event, and Nissan South Africa extend their sincere condolences to the family,” said Piet Swanepoel, President of the MSA Off Road Car Racing Commission.
