Twenty two year old David Veringa wasted no time in delivering on the promise he showed throughout the 2002 season when he won both heats at the first race of the season in his Sabat Rhema Formula Vee. –
– After winning the first heat comfortably when early leader Andre Herbst had made an error and left the track, Veringa was to fight much harder for his win in the second heat. The youngster was fighting to regain the lead when a large accident forced the officials to red flag the race. When the dust had settled Veringa was declared the winner after leading the lap prior to the stoppage. –
– David is again being supported by Sabat Batteries, one of the most famous names in South African motorsport, for the 2003 season. Sabat have a three pronged approach to circuit racing this year and David has thrown down the gauntlet to fellow Sabat drivers Franco di Mateo (Sabat Mustang), and Craig Nicholson (Sabat Honda), who will both be competing in Sabat colours at Kyalami next weekend (22 February). –
– Di Mateo is a stalwart of Wesbank V8 Championship racing and was frequently seen challenging the leaders in 2002. With some solid testing under his belt, Franco is looking forward to a competitive campaign this season and will find out on Saturday if he can repeat the sort of form he showed last year. –
– Craig Nicholson’s 2002 Production Car season was cut short after a huge crash at Killarney last September that left the CAR Magazine staffer with broken ribs and a destroyed racecar. Nicholson has however secured a class C Honda 180i Ballade for the 2003 season and is looking to put the disappointments of 2002 behind him and returning to a competitive formula. Whilst there have been a few niggles with the new car it has nevertheless produced extremely competitive lap times in testing and Craig is looking forward to proving the vehicle in competition. –
– Only time will tell if di Mateo and Nicholson can match Veringa’s achievement, but both will be determined to do so at Kyalami on the 22nd. –
