Race one of the single-make Engen Volkswagen Cup championship for Volkswagen Polo Vivo race cars at Aldo Scribante Raceway in Port Elizabeth on Saturday was all about the battle between the championship leader Kosie Weyers and Dewald Brummer. Brummer led for much of the race but ultimately it was Weyers who found a way past to claim the chequered flag.
Known for a brash racing style and a take-no-prisoners attitude on the track, Weyers is proving a rather different competitor this season. A far more mature, consistent but still extremely quick Weyers entered the PE round on a high thanks to back-to-back victories at round two in Cape Town. He is clearly focused on a championship title this year and is driving to achieve that very aim.
With a fight behind him raging for fourth place between Bryan Morgan and Shaun La Reservee (ultimately won by Morgan), Mathew Hodges raced to the finish for third place.
For Masters competitor (drivers over 27 years) Eddie Rodrigues another good performance in this series was not possible thanks to a broken gear selector. This relegated him to the back of the field in that first race. It was up to Etienne du Toit to fly the flag for the older drivers and he crossed the line for 12th place.
In race two of the series Weyers was again hard at win to claim the victory – with Brummer on his heels. The pair crossed for first and second respectively at the end of the 12 lap race, this time with Trevor Bland behind them. For Du Toit race two was another opportunity to claim the Masters’ victory ahead of Rodrigues.
The PE event has resulted in another double victory for Weyers who claimed first overall on the day while Brummer and Hodges claimed second and third respectively.
