The Cars in Action Festival of Motoring at AA Kyalami on July 17 and 18 has the makings of a blockbuster event with entries still pouring in for the Historic Car Racing Register (HRCR) events, which will include Historic Single Seaters, Volkspares Fine Cars, Lotus Challenge, DK Porsche Challenge and Volkspares HRCR Touring Cars.
“So far 170 entries have been received and we are expecting at least another 25 in the various classes,” said Sports Car Club of SA Vice-chairman, John Reidy. “The action promises to be fast and furious and classic car and motor racing fans won’t be disappointed.”
The Volkspares HRCR Touring Car category has attracted 48 entries in seven classes with vehicles ranging from exotic Porsche RSR look-alikes to Ford Lotus Cortinas, Renault R8’s, MGB GT’s Volvo, Alfa Romeo and Mini Coopers. The cars may look old but they are well prepared and deceptively quick and provide action packed racing right through the field.
The DK Porsche Challenge entry is expected to exceed 35 entries and includes fourteen Porsche 924’s, the LDS Barracuda Porsche to be driven by Harry Costas, Johan van Veelen’s Porsche RSR Turbo and Rob Bygrave and Rolf Sclub’s Porsche 944 Turbo Cup models.
The Lotus Challenge, which caters for Caterham, Birkin 7 and Lotus 7 models powered by a variety of engines including Ford Z-Tec, Toyota 1600, Mazda, Nissan and Opel, has attracted 20 entries while thirty-four entries have been received for the Volkspares Fine Cars category, which features an array of interesting vehicles including an Austin Healey 100/6, a couple of MGB GT’s, an MGA 1600, a pair of Lancia Monte Carlos, Fords of virtually every model including Consul, Anglia, Cortina GT, Escort and Capri V6 and a quartet of Alfa Romeos including a GT Junior, Guilia 2000, 1750 GTV and a 1750 Junior.
The Historic Single Seater category features some racing cars with an interesting pedigree. Classic pre-1974 Formula Fords make up the bulk of the entry and the likes of Duncan Thursby’s spindly Cooper Jap replica is an example of just how vulnerable drivers were in the 1950’s.
Practice and qualifying for the various HRCR events gets underway on Friday at 10h00 and again at 07h30 on Saturday with the first race scheduled for 09h25.
The Cars in Action Festival of Motoring is a weekend for the whole family with numerous other attractions including the Bosal Concours d’Elegance, Concours d’Etat and Tops Only competitions, the Rotax RM1 Race of Champions and GP Junior Challenge at the Kyalami Kart Circuit, the CRRASA Classic Regularity Rally, the SAHRA Special Stage Rally and the Vodacom 200 sports car race on Sunday, ride ‘n drive opportunities on the skidpan and 4×4 course, a Playstation arcade, product displays and a kiddies play area.
A one-day admission ticket costs R40,00 and a two-day admission ticket costs R70,00.
