Johan Fourie, in the Sasol dualfuelä Omega, won both the 8 lap WesBank Samcar races at the final round of the Vodacom Power Tour at A.A. Kyalami yesterday (22 November), but the championship winner will be decided by a MSA Appeal Court following the controversial annulment of the result of the first race by the stewards of the race meeting. –
– They, upon a protest instituted by Fourie’s main championship rival Grant van Schalkwyk (Hi-Q Mustang), decreed that the race should have been stopped after Melvill Priest (Mad Buzz/Sasol Omega) jumped the start and a collision involving him, van Schalkwyk and Mackie Adlem (Mustang) ensued at the second corner, all three retiring from the race, which Fourie went on to win from Larry Wilford (Fuchs Mustang) and the returning Roelf du Plessis (Camaro). –
– The decision, made just before the start of the second race, meant that Fourie’s perceived 13 point lead going into the finale was actually a 7 point deficit to van Schalkwyk, the Championship status before the weekend’s deciders. –
– Unaware of the decision, the Sasol driver easily won race two from Van Schalkwyk and his teammate, Zane Pearce, but the race one “cancellation” meant that van Schalkwyk finished 4 points ahead of Fourie for the year. –
– Supervan Racing have appealed the decision of the stewards and the 2003 WesBank champion will now only be declared after the relevant MSA court hearing on the matter. –
– During the season, Fourie won 10 of the 19 races, finished 2nd on 4 occasions, took 4th in a race and had 4 DNF’s along the way. –
– Van Schalkwyk won 4 races, took 2nd nine times and recorded 3 DNF’s. –
– Phillip Kekana ended his Engen Volkswagen Cup season in satisfying fashion, taking the Sasol dualfuelä Polo to 18th in both races from 23rd on the grid. Kekana’s good friend, Tshops Sipuka, wrapped up the championship honours for the second consecutive year. –
– Sasol dualfuelä – backed racers won both the SA Production Car Class D events, Angus Thompson (Geronga Golf) winning race one while Clint Weston was victorious in the latter event in his Furman Glass Ford Ikon. –
– 16-year old Kawasaki Superbiker, Sheridan Morias, was the popular choice for the Sasol SAGMJ Top Gun award. The fearless youngster outride the 2003 champion, Russel Wood (Autopage Yamaha) over the 8 laps of the second part of the red-flagged Superbike race, although he was officially classified 2nd to Wood over the full combined time for the 10 laps. –
