Rustenburg youngster Sheehan Grant put in solid performances all weekend to secure himself the Car Magazine Rookie of the Day honours and a cheque for R 2 500 at a packed Killarney circuit.
Grant, who is now in his second season in the “Brat Pack” class E contingent on Midas Production Car racing has been showing flashes of promise for some time now but lacked a little consistency.
He put his struggles behind him this weekend by qualifying his ageing Opel Kadet 140is in second position late on Friday afternoon behind Opel Corsa pilot Jody Powel. After a quick but steady drive in heat one he finished third overall behind Powel and the Toyota Tazz of Dave Compton. Better things were in store for Sheehan in the second heat when he again stayed out of trouble and drove well to finish second behind the VW Citi Golf 140i of Hans Moore and ahead of a hard charging Riyad Jaffer in his Toyota Tazz.
Grant prefers the faster circuit and will be looking to do well in East London next month when the Midas Production car circus visits that neck of the woods. However his job will be made more difficult after picking up a fair dollop of weight in the way of success penalties for his Cape Town performance.
With the prospect of a whopping R 25 000 up for grabs for the Rookie of the year at the end of the season, there will be a number of class E contenders trying to grab the honours in East London.
