The Vrede born teenager has been co-driving for his father, Johan, for two years in the Chavani Colt Rodeo and currently leads the Class D championship by one point from former champions Hein Grobler and Gerhard Prinsloo in the GBS Racing Nissan Hardbody.
Van der Merwe junior is a student in Grade 10 at Harriston English Private School in Harrismith and fits in working on the Colt between his studies and other interests, which include fly-fishing, hockey and tap dancing.
“Sharing the off road racing experience with my son has done a lot for our relationship and it is a privilege to be able to engage in a past time that provides an opportunity for father-son bonding,” added van der Merwe senior.
The youngster has ambitions to take over the wheel of the Chavani Colt from his father in time to come.
“I would dearly like to drive as well but will have to wait until I have obtained a driver’s license and completed my studies,” said Marthinus. “I plan to get my license soon and am confident that I will pass my final exams with flying colours.”
The van de Merwe’s will be in action during the forthcoming Queen Motor Spares Tarka 400, which takes place in the Tarkastad area on August 22 and 23.
