This weekend (17-20 May) sees the 40th anniversary of the ADAC Zurich 24 Hours of Nürburgring run on the famous “green hell” circuit in Germany. Accepted as the unofficial proving ground (although more and more manufacturers are basing their testing programmes here) for every future performance model, the Nürburgring’s famous Nordschleife (North Loop), built around the village of Nürburg in the Eifel mountains, was opened in 1983 and comprises a total of 154 corners over a distance of 24,4 km.
This year’s race will see 200 cars, including touring, production and prototypes, and 700 drivers, compete for top honours. Falling on a European long weekend, the event is expected to draw at least 290 000 spectators who come to see race cars that they can more closely assocociate with compared with those that run at the arguably more glamorous 24 Hours of Le Mans.
In this video, we are given a behind-the-scenes view of the Nürburgring race weekend, including some spectacular footage from the 2011 event.
