In what could just easily have been a scene from the NASCAR-based movies Days of Thunder and Talladega Nights, a massive accident on the final lap of the Sprint Cup race (ironically held at Talladega) saw 25 competitors wiped out of the race. In all honesty though, based on the close action and high-speed manoeuvring going on as the cars headed past the white flag, it was surely an accident waiting to happen.
Watch as Tony Stewart is tagged on the inside of the third corner and becomes a passenger as his car is unceremoniously flug up and into the close-following pack.
Fotunately no one was hurt in the accident. One of the only cars to escape the carniage, that of Matt Kenseth, went on to take the chequered flag.
