Who will forget two of our most talented young drivers Johan Fourie (MD Transport Mustang) and Hennie Groenewald (Rectron Camaro) fighting it out door to door until they tangled on the last lap and retired leaving Deon Joubert (Petronas Opel Astra) to win the first Wesbank V8 race for his team on their home ground.
Groenewald and Fourie showed they are on form once again at Kyalami last month with a win apiece.
With Fourie, Groenewald, Joubert and Shaun Watson-Smith (Patronas Opel Astra) who qualified in the front row at Kyalami a month ago entered for Saturday, the action up front is sure to be hot once again. The Opel team definitely is hungry for another win at Aldo Scribante in front of their own fans.
With 120 points still up for grabs in the last six races of the Wesbank V8 season Sarel Van Der Merwe (Sasol Dual Fuel Mustang) leading the championship is not all that secure for another championship title. He is just 28 points ahead of Ben Morgenrood (Auto Trader Mustang) and 58 points ahead of Johan Fourie who has won 7 of the last 9 races since entering V8 racing in June. So Sarel has to either win which he’s used to doing or pull in second positions everytime to come out on top at the end of the year. Morgenrood is equally determined to do the same.
Never to be discounted is Willie Hepburn (Camaro) who has finished and scored points in all 16 races held so far. Larry Wilford is another old hand who can pull a win out of the bag after second and third positions all season.
Riaan Botma (Mobil Dodge Viper) has got the handling sorted out of the only Dodge Viper in the Wesbank lineup and is himself capable of leading and winning. The reigning champion Roelf Du Plessis (Speedy Camaro) at last is starting to get good results after a disastrous beginning to his season.
With Wesbank V8 racing developing into a Chev versus Ford battle there are interesting contests going on behind the leading pack and all the way down the field.
The Chev runners Ray Wilford (William Penn Camaro), East London’s Martin Van Zummeren (Border Towing Camaro) both waiting for spares from America, Pierre De Waal (Camaro) and Mike Morrell (Macromed Camaro) in the Melville Priest car plus ex oval track stars Danie Correia (Camaro), Rudolf De Vos (Tim Jan Calibra) will be flying the general’s bow tie against the Fords of Gugu Zulu (Sasol Dual Fuel Mustang), Franco Di Matteo (PF Hydraulics Mustang), Derek Van Blerk (Sabat Mustang) and VSP star Steve Smith in his colourful Ford Falcon.
Aldo Scribante is a circuit renowned for its friendliness and a good view of the entire track. The Wesbank V8’s are sure to provide the best high-speed motor racing entertainment in Port Elizabeth this Saturday.
