AA KYALAMI TO SILVERSTON MG EXPEDITION
Veteran classic car race and rally driver Roger Pearce’s overland expedition from AA Kyalami to Silverstone in the UK, via Africa, the Middle East and Europe officially gets underway at 04h00 tomorrow morning (June 9) from the gates of the AA Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.
Pearce will attempt to complete the epic 15 000 Kilometre journey in his 1973 MGB GT that has seen over 100 000 Kilometres of competition in Southern Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, South America and Mexico in the past 15 years in 31 days but has built in a buffer of 11 days in the event of mechanical problems, ferry delays and the like.
His aim is to arrive at Silverstone, bearing a message of goodwill from the Managing Director of the Automobile Association of SA, Ed Koch to Ray Belm who is the Chairman of the British Racing Drivers Club, which owns the circuit that is the home of the British Grand Prix, in time for the annual MG get together at the world famous track.
“I’m hoping to reach the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls by nightfall tomorrow,” said Pearce after the ceremonial start of his expedition at AA Kyalami today. “Thereafter I aim to make as much headway as possible on each day as I am expecting road conditions in Kenya to deteriorate due to rain and there is a likelihood of bureaucratic delays in Ethiopia and the Sudan.”
