The world famous, and now historic, Roy Hesketh Motor Racing Circuit outside Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu Natal is soon to be restored and preserved as South Africa’s number one classic and historic motoring venue, hosting local and international events.
80% of the circuit and its surrounds are exactly the same as they were at its closure in 1982. The exciting development plans include:
- A closed 2.5km circuit.
- Reconstruction of the original pits and control tower in period style.
- Incorporation of a Hall of Fame, Legends Café, and living historic motor racing museum.
The venue and the facilities are also ideal for broader community participation, and groups such as the motor industry, cycling fraternity, Walk-for-life, and nature conservationists, who have been invited to participate.
In order for the long-term protection and preservation of Roy Hesketh as an historic venue of cultural significance, public support has to be demonstrated.

The Foundation will introduce its development plan at the “Hesketh Revival” event to be held on 30 March, which will include static displays of period racing machinery and motor industry stands.
The complex will provide work opportunities and skills training, as the museum and classic restoration centre, and the events, some of which are planned to rival the Duzi Canoe Marathon in size, will bring much needed additional revenue for the hotel and tourism industry of Pietermaritzburg and its surrounds.
