Johan Fourie, Sasol’s lead driver in the Supervan Racing WesBank Samcar team, is in feisty mood going into the 2003 Vodacom Power Tour finale at A.A. Kyalami on Saturday (22 November). –
– The defending champion and “S.A Drivers” title-holder knows that this weekend cannot be about defending, but attacking, and winning both V8 heats. –
– Fourie is fully aware that he needs to take the Sasol dualfuelä Omega to victory. If Grant van Schalkwyk (Hi–Q Mustang), seven points in the lead after the penultimate round in Port Elizabeth earlier this month, despite following the Sasol car home in both races there, finishes ahead of him or 2nd in both Kyalami races, than the Ford driver will take the 2003 title. –
– “He who currently wears the crown” would very much like to do the double, like he did in 1998 and 1999, winning the Kent and Zetec Sasol Formula Ford championships. –
– Teammate Melvill Priest’s Sasol dualfuelä-backed Mad Buzz Omega will be back on track after a blown engine forced him out of the PE race. Priest has since been back to Aldo Scribante for testing and hopes to be able to support Fourie in his title quest. –
– Although it has been, by his previous performances and honours, a disappointing year for Phillip Kekana (Sasol dualfuelä Polo) in the Engen Volkswagen Cup series, the Sowetan is positive and prepared for the characteristic bumper to bumper racing seen all year long. –
– “They should call Polos the big banger category”, he chuckles. “Anyway it’s been a good (learning) experience with a few points in the bag to date and the continued support of Sasol. Naturally, I’d love to thank them, Volkswagen and make my team proud with a top six finish this weekend. –
– The Sasol dualfuelä squad in the SA Production Car category should, on record, also put on a good show. –
– In class A, Steve Wyndham has brought his Ford Credit Falcon very close to the pace of the leading BMW 330’s of late. If he can win, as he did at Welkom in October, expect plenty of celebratory “doughnuts” around Kyalami. –
– Fellow Ford Racing Class D Ikon racers Clint Weston and Fanie de Bruin have often been the pace-setters and victors in the 1600 cc duel in 2003, while another Sasol-supported podium finisher is Angus Thompson (Geronga Volkswagen Citi Golf). –
– Most determined of all is Craig Nicholson. The Sabat Honda man is tired of the final podium spot in Class C and is shooting higher for this weekend’s season-ending national circuit race meeting. –
– Besides all the Sasol-liveried cars on track, the Sasol Jordan F1 car, decked-out with the latest Sony PlayStation 2 Formula One game, will be in the paddock for the public to “play” in. –
