There is a new face and a new determination in the Sasol Supervan Racing squad going into Round 5 of the WesBank Samcar Championship, in the Vodacom Power Tour, at A.A. Kyalami this Saturday (28 June). –
– After a comparative “disappointing” performance last time out in East London on 24 May (DNF and 3rd), the reigning champion, Johan Fourie in his Sasol DualFuel Omega stills maintains the overall lead in what is turning out to be a closely contested championship. –
– Grant van Schalkwyk (HI-Q Mustang) and Larry Wilford (Fuchs Titan Mustang) are proving to be the closest challengers at this stage, and Fourie knows that reliability and speed will be the determining factors at altitude this weekend. –
– His experience is, however, such that the approach for the weekend is positive, with the quest for an increased lead the vital differential. –
– From the A.A. Kyalami race, Melvill Priest will be his new official Supervan team-mate, in the Mad Buzz/Sasol-backed Omega. The V8 rookie has shown his true potential on a number of occasions in the Premier formula and should be “en song” this time out, with testing and confidence behind him. –
– Former Supervan V8 racer, Shaun Watson-Smith, has converted to the Engen Volkswagen Cup championship, with backing from Barnetts Autospares and Sasol DualFuel. –
– In the context of the Sasol involvement in this series, headed by Phillip Kekana and his Sasol DualFuel Polo, this is good news. –
– Kekana, “bludgeoned” by mid-field competitors at East London, needs a partner with the experience and ability of Watson-Smith, who can provide much input from a technical and strategy point of view. –
– The Sowetan is intent on staying out of the mayhem that characterizes this series in 2003 and hopes to capitialise on his excellent qualifying position, as seen at the coast last month. –
– Backing up the Sasol Steam Team in the WesBank Samcar and Engen Series’ are the “always-delivering” S.A. Production Car squad of the Ford Racing team in Class A and Class D (Steve Wyndham, Fanie de Bruin, Miguel Pasquale and Clint Weston), as well as Class C privateer, Craig Nicholson (Sabat Honda) and Angus Thompson (Class D Volkswagen Chico). All have been on the podium in their respective classes this year, powered by the unique Sasol DualFuel 102 Octane racing fuel and lubricants. –
