Sasol’s Top Gun racers, Gary Formato and Phillip Kekana, go into this weekend’s (3 April) round 2 of the Vodacom Power Tour at Killarney Raceway, Cape Town, with improved machinery and greater confidence of top performances in the respective WesBank Samcar and S.A. Production Car races on the day. –
– Formato’s Sasol Ford Mustang has undergone an intensive chassis and front suspension overhaul since the February A.A. Kyalami opener, where the former V8 champion recorded a 3rd and fifth, to lie 4th in the 2004 championship, 14 points behind the leader, Johan Fourie (MD Transport Omega). –
– The Omega was pretty much miles ahead of the Mustangs and Jaguars at Kyalami, resulting in the latter vehicles’ teams maximizing the aerodynamic regulations of SAMCAR – to create improved front-end downforce. –
– The suspension on the Sasol Mustang has also been re-engineered for greater grip, highly – important on a tight circuit like Killarney. As per the new tradition in the series, the hardest-working SAMCAR team technician will be awarded with the Sasol “Top Tech.” Prize and trophy at the conclusion of the 2 heats on Saturday. –
– In Class B of S.A. Production Cars, Sowetan Phillip “The Township Tornado” Kekana will have a real racing Sasol Toyota RunX Rsi at his disposal. –
– The late arrival of his donor car before the opening round saw Race Prep build the car in an amazing mere three days, and Kekana basically drove a stock-standard vehicle at Kyalami. –
– With proper racing shocks, exhaust system and ECU now part of the Sasol Toyota package, the full-time advanced driving instructor has the goods to better challenge the Ford Focus, Mini Cooper S and other Toyotas in this, possibly the most entertaining class in the championship. –
– Motoring journalist, Angus Thompson also carries the Sasol brand in the hatch-back dominated Class C, in his older, but ever-quick, 1600cc Citi Golf. He will want to build on his overall victory at Kyalami, while the Sasol 102 octane-fuelled Daihatsu Chirade of Irshad Jaffer should go well at the coast too. –
– Besides seeing the Sasol Top Gun track aces at Killarney on Saturday, motorsport fans can also meet Formato and Kekana at the new Sasol RCC (service station) in Labelle Road, Stikland, (Bellville), between 16h00 and 17h00 on Thursday 1 April – for autographs and prizes. –
