Sasol’s Top Gun racers, Gary Formato (WesBank V8s) and Phillip Kekana (S.A. Production Cars), scored a podium apiece at the Sasol “Wheels & Wings” Day at Zwartkops International Raceway on Saturday (26 June), during the 5th round of the Vodacom Power Tour. –
– Formato placed his Sasol Ford Mustang 2nd on the qualifying grid, behind championship leader Johan Fourie (MD Transport Omega) and was upbeat about least maintaining that spot in the first 15-lap race. –
– Frustratingly, during the latter part of the event, the front-end again began “washing away”, which saw Hennie Groenewald (Havoline Jaguar) take second, with the Sasol Top Gun 3rd, and very disappointed. –
– The same understeer in race two, which ran for 5 laps under a safety car, resulted in a 4th for Formato. Fourie, Groenewald and Grant van Schalkwyk (Hi-Q Ford Mustang) headed him across the finish line. –
– Formato Racing are spending today at Zwartkops to attempt to solve the mystery of the car starting each race weekend on the pace, but fading in performance during the races. –
– Sheer determination and a superbly-prepared (by Race Prep) Class B Sasol Toyota RunX Rsi saw Sowetan, Phillip Kekana, record his best result in the 2004 S.A. Production Car Championship. –
– Second on the grid, behind the super-charged Castrol Mini Cooper S of Shaun van der Linde, Kekana held that position at the flag of race one. –
– A demon start in race 2 resulted in a “punt” from behind by Bert Grogor (Toyota Corolla) in the first corner, Kekana spinning into the sand trap, while the entire field swept by. –
– With adrenalin pumping, the “Township Tornado” nevertheless blasted past seven class competitors to take 4th, and a magnificent 3rd overall for the day. The 9 points he earned at the Sasol-sponsored day now put him in good stead to challenge for Class B honours over the remaining 5 rounds, beginning at A.A. Kyalami on 31 July. –
– Watch highlights of the Sasol “Wheels & Wings” Day on Vodacom on Track on Supersport (CSN and SS1) at 18h00 from this Thursday (1 July). –
