Sasol’s Johan Fourie and Shaun Watson-Smith shone for the Steam Team at round 7 of the Vodacom Power Tour at A.A. Kyalami on Saturday (30 August) –
– Defending WesBank Samcar champion Fourie, in his Sasol dualfuelä Omega, was again unstopable throughout the weekend, taking a comfortable pole position on Friday and winning both 8 lap heats, ahead of Grant van Schalkwyk (Hi-Q Mustang) and Riaan Botma (Havoline Jaguar), respectively. –
– With Larry Wilford (Fuchs Titan Mustang) only managing a 7th and 4th on the day, Fourie has jumped to 2nd in the series, now only 5 points behind van Schalkwyk and 7 clear of third-placed Wilford. –
– Sasol-supported Supervan Racing youngster Melvill Priest (Mad Buzz Omega) with 6th and 7th spot finishes, elevated himself to 6th overall in his debut V8 season. –
– Former Sasol Supervan racer Shaun Watson-Smith (Barnett Autospares Polo), sponsored by Sasol dualfuelä in the Engen Volkswagen Cup one-make class, stole the thunder in race 2 of the series, winning from Silvio Scribante (Bell Polo), plus another ten former saloon car champions. –
– Sadly, his, Scribante’s, Michael Stephen’s and Sasol dualfuelä Polo pilot, Phillip Kekana’s first race came to an abrupt end early on lap one when a combination of collisions sidelined them all on the spot. –
– Kekana t-boned the spinning Dorian Garvie going into Nashua corner, bending his Polo’s chasis after the heavy front-end impact. Despite hurried repairs between races, the Sowetan was forced to “park” his beaten (up) car after 2 laps in the later event. –
– Reghard Roets won the opening Polo race and claimed two podium positions in his class A Kay Eddie Estates BMW 330 in the Production Car heats to earn the Sasol SAGMJ “Top Gun” award and prize money on Saturday – a brilliant all-round performance against the best in both categories. –
– The Class D Production Car podiums were dominated by Sasol-powered competitors. Clint Weston (Furman Glass Ford Ikon), Fanie de bruin (Murray & Roberts Foundry Ikon) and Angus Thompson (Geronga Safaris Citi Golf) filled the 3 steps after race one. –
– Running with additional weight, as per the regulations, Thompson and de Bruin were placed 2nd and 3rd in the second heat, won by the ex-Kekana Toyota Tazz in the hands of Dave Compton, who placed 4th in the first race. –
