Circuit racing returns to the SCC Lichtenburg Raceway, on Saturday 3 July, with a mixed bag of Single Seater, Saloon Car and Exotic Sports Car racing. The day’s racing, at the SCC Lichtenburg Winter Race Meeting, gets underway at eleven thirty and includes races for the 1400cc Volkswagen powered Formula Vee single seaters, Formula Libre and the motorcycle engined Formula M single seaters. Saloon car action, will be provided by the Silver Cup category, while the DK Porsche 924 and DK Porsche Unlimited Challenge races bring some exotic racing machinery, to the North West Province.
Heading the DK Porsche Unlimited field, will be the Johan Van Veelen Martini 3300cc RSR Porsche Turbo and the Vernon Bricknell Nationwide Airlines RSR Porsche, with other Porsche 911 and 944 models in the field as well. Some of the Porsche 924 competitors have also elected to do the Unlimited races, in addition to the Porsche 924 races, where the field should be headed by the likes of Brian Algar, Peter Bailey and Craig Nicolson.
The highly competitive Formula Vee single seater category, is headed by National and Regional Championship log leader Symm Grobler (#2 Auto Mecca Rhema 2) but he will be hard pressed to keep an on form Lee Thompson (#11 Rhema) at bay. These two are not the only contenders for victory and Alan Holm (#4 Johannesburg Bright Steels Rhema 2), along with teammate Jaco Schriks (#9 Johannesburg Bright Steels Rhema 2) and Peter Hills (#5 Vacuform Rhema), can also consider themselves as serious contenders for victory, at the tight 1,6KM SCC Lichtenburg Raceway.
Not far behind the leaders, good performances can also be expected from the likes of Wayne Bennett (#10 Lafarge Readymix Rhema 2) Jonathan Vilaca (#70 Vision), development driver Benny Phetla (#17 Vacuform Rhema), Jannie Geyser (#18 Vision) and the Cartmell brothers, Claude (#15 Rand Brake Sting) and Kevin (#21 Rand Brake Sting). Of the other Formula Vee development drivers, Kearn Francis may have some experience of the circuit, in Sports 2000, but this will be his first Formula Vee race at the circuit, while Dayview Mogane will be racing at Lichtenburg, for the first time,
The quickest cars, in the Formula Libre race, should be the Formula GTi cars of father and son Vic and Alex Pitro and the Tom Ungaro car, although the Formula Fords, of the experienced Graham Vos and Graham Clayton could give them a run for their money, on the short, tight Lichtenburg circuit. The Grant Will Formula Vee “Ferrari”, should also attract it’s fair share of attention, on the day.
The Formula M field will be headed by the Class A cars of Adele Bosch and Willer Simioni, while the little 125cc cars, for the Juniors, will have their own race.
Heading the Silver Cup entry, should be Coenraad Bosman, in his potent Chev Firenza, the Cobie Andrews Nissan Skyline and the Wimpie Steyn Alfa GTV. Other regular Silver Cup competitors, include Rory Sharp in his Alfa Guilletta. the Nissan Sentra of Attie Plomp, the Billy Corriea Mazda, Niel Barnard in his Toyota Conquest and the Dawie Olivier Toyota. A number of Honda Ballards have also made their presence felt, in the category this year, with the most well known name being that of Brian Luyt.
