The battle at the front of the South African Single-Seater field is so intense that even a puncture can’t slow the pace of the racing. Nicholas van Weely has the title lead with Robert Wolk chasing hard to try and claim the Formula Volkswagen championship again.
In race one at Killarney on Saturday it was Wolk who raced to the flag for first place with Van Weely taking second. The second race again saw Wolk leading, but Van Weely was slowly reeling him in as Wolk had a puncture – but wasn’t prepared to stop and sacrifice the points.
The result was that in race two, Van Weely claimed the race victory with Wolk in second place.
Now the pair go to the final round of the season – at Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday, 1 November, level on points – setting the scene for a do-or-die sprint to the finish line.
The Formula 1600 category proved to be a three-way battle for track position between Scott Temple, Bevan Williams and Keegan Campos. The trio were involved in pitched battles during both races to decide who would finish where on the podium.
The first race win went to Temple who was followed home by Williams and Campos. In race two, Campos climbed to the top step while Williams stayed steady in second and Temple slipped down to third place. Those two second-place finishes by Campos sees him move into third place in the championship, just two points ahead of Graham Hepburn who has now been pushed down to fourth spot.
The South African Single-Seaters field moves to Zwartkops Raceway for the final round of the season, on 1 November, when both the Formula Volkswagen and F1600 titles will be decided in a n0-holds dash for the finish line.
