The Super Series returns to Zwartkops this weekend for round seven of the national circuit racing championship. Gauteng race fans can expect to see all major formulas out in action.
Leading the charge will be the Bridgestone Production Car brigade. Class A will see Audi S4s doing battle with BMW 335is and Subaru STIs for valuable championship points. Defending champion Michael Stephen (Audi S4) holds a handy 35 point lead in the title race. In Class T for force-fed hatchbacks such as the Golf GTI, Mini Cooper JCW, Ford Focus ST and Renault Megane RS (plus one Chev Cruze) matters are very different with Graeme Nathan (Golf GTI) and Gavin Cronje (Mini) tied on 154 points apiece. The Mini usually has the upper hand at the tight circuit but Nathan is a wily old campaigner. For more information click here.
More hot hatches will be seen bashing panels in the one-make VW Cup series for Polo Vivos. This is one of the closest fought of all the classes with up to 20 cars qualifying within a one-second bracket. There have been multiple winners over the past few races and predicting this weekend’s results is not an easy task. With a large field there is also the ever-present danger of accidents, which usually takes place during the opening laps.
Fans of V8 monsters will get to witness the V8 Supercars tear up the track with blistering lap times. As usual it is Ben Morgenrood (yes, still racing) that leads the field. The four-wheel action will be rounded off by the SA single seaters. This field comprises of the Formula VW machines, boasting slicks and full downforce wings. Bolstering that field are the Formula Fords, often regarded as the breeding ground for young talent.
Two-wheel enthusiasts will be catered for as well. The Superbike category for 1 000 cc machines seem to build up a ridiculous turn of speed around the 2,4 km long circuit. No less spectacular and, with, arguably more exciting racing, are the Supersport (600 cc) bikes.
Unlike the Cape, the weather forecast looks ideal for a great weekend’s race action, just don’t forget your sunscreen.
