Team Sasol Volkswagen Golf pilots, Enzo Kuun and Jan Habig are both looking to record a second win of the season in the Sasol dualfuelä SA Rally Championship 2003, on this weekend’s (19/20 September) Subaru Cape Rally in the Western Cape. –
– It’s the penultimate round, in “miggie-land”. Rallied predominantly up the West Coast, towards Malmesbury, in the wheat fields, the primary interest will be on the championship honours dual between the Toyotas of Serge Damseaux and Etienne Lourens. However, the Sasol dualfuelä Golfs could steal the event thunder come the finish at Killarney Raceway on Saturday afternoon. –
– Kuun and co-driver, Guy Hodgson last won on the “Sasol” in June and came home 2nd to Lourens on last month’s MotorPics Mountain Trial. The Cape Town-based “combo” are 5th overall in the championship. –
– Defending champions, Habig and Douglas Judd, are a further 3 positions behind in the standings and would love to repeat their winning performance on the season-opening Hitachi-Power Tools Tour Natal. That was in March and, as much as they know that they will not be marching towards a 4th consecutive championship this year, their experience and determination for victory is strong as over. –
– With ongoing development, the Sasol dualfuelä Polo Playas of Hergen Fekken/Dave Lewcowicz and Tjaart van der Walt/Mike Burrows have shown a competitive class A7 pace of late. Engine reliability has sometimes negated a potential podium finish, but the team is more confident this time around. –
– Van der Walt, in particular, is looking for a clean run after his top ten finish in the mountains. –
– Team Sasol Volkswagen’s best chance of a class championship lies in the hands of Gugu Zulu and Dave McGregor in their Sasol dualfuelä Chico. –
– Class A5 wins on the Toyota Dealers and Sasol rallies and 2nd on the Volkswagen and MotorPics events see them in a very respectable 18th overall in the championship, and only 10 points behind Rodney Visagie/Carolyn Swan (Team Total Tazz) in the class honours’ battle. –
– KZN teammates, Nkosinathi Nzimande and FaniFani Meyiwa have finished every round of the Sasol dualfuelä championship, one of only 3 crews to have done so, along with Class N3 champions, Charl Wilken/Robin Houghton (Castrol Toyota RunX) and Class N1 victors, Brian and Keith Heine (Penny Pinchers Volkswagen Chico), who join the A5 runners this weekend, with up-rated power. –
– The “Impi Warriors” are themselves only 5 points adrift of Zulu and could also take the class title over the remaining two rounds. –
