One of the ‘forgotten’ heroes of South African motorsport will be one of the many attractions at the Sasol DualFuel raceday, presented by the Vodacom Power Tour, at the Zwartkops Raceway on August 2.
Three-time former champion Gary Formato will be back in action in the WesBank Samcar Series, and will breathe new life into a championship that is delicately poised. The Zwartkops meeting is round six of the Vodacom Power Tour, and Formato will be out in the Auto Trader Jaguar XR8 with the WesBank clash one of seven national categories on the programme.
There are also some volatile championship issues developing in the other five national categories, and racing is going to be ultra competitive on the tight Zwartkops layout.
As is the norm at the Pretoria West circuit, on the R55, the meeting will have a real family day atmosphere and entertainment other than the brilliant race action will include no less than two air displays, performed by the Mazda Aerobatics Team and the SAAF Air Force Museum. Back by popular demand following their outing at AA Kyalami will be the Harley Davidson stunt team, performing some gob-smacking tricks on their Harley Bules.
As one of the sponsors of the Vodacom Power Tour, MG will also put on a parade of classic and modern MG’s on the day during the lunchtime track parade.
In addition, there will be the Sasol Performance Playground. The playground will feature a modified version of the Sasol Jordan Formula One car – now fitted out with PlayStation 2 F1 games – jumping castles and other entertainment to keep the younger members of the family happy.
An added bonus will be radio controlled racecar demonstrations by Sasol factory driver Johan Fourie. The talented young Capetonian is the reigning WesBank Samcar champion as well as the national radio controlled champion too.
A variety of Sasol race and rally machinery – including the Sasol Mini Baja off-road vehicle – will also be on view during the lunch track parade. The Zwartkops faithful will also find plenty to occupy them at the kart circuit where there will be a display of MINI’s, and karts will be for hire.
The more adventurous will also be able to have a ride in a MINI at R10 a lap around the kart circuit, with the proceeds going to the Reach for a Dream Foundation. The activity does not end there, however, and instructors will be on hand at the Sasol DualFuel Skidpan to put drivers through their ‘defensive driving’ paces, and there will be 4×4 demonstrations by the Zwartkops Off-Road Academy (ZORA).
"We have had a tremendous response from crowds throughout the country this year, and the Sasol DualFuel day at Zwartkops is shaping up as another blockbuster," said Vodacom Power Tour project director Anthony Lauter. "With six national categories that take in saloon cars, sports cars, singleseaters and the spectacular Superbikes, there is a little of something for everyone.
"Add to the track action the wide variety of family-orientated entertainment, and you have the makings of a great day."
Gate entry is R 40 per adult with children under 14 free of charge. Racing is scheduled to start at 10h30 on August 2, with a full programme of official practice and qualifying on the Friday.
